Feeling unsafe in hotels, motels, or meeting rooms? Eavesdropping tech is getting more sophisticated and compact. Here is how to protect yourself.
Common Hiding Spots
Bad actors often hide devices where there is a power source or a wide view:
- Power outlets, light switches.
- Smoke detectors (ceiling).
- Two-way mirrors (bathroom).
- Wifi Routers, TVs, Air conditioners.
- Flower vases, teddy bears, wall clocks.
Manual Detection Methods
- Visual Observation: Look for unusual small holes, extra wires, or strange blinking LEDs.
- Use Phone Flash: Turn off all lights, turn on flash and shine at suspicious spots (mirrors, outlets). Camera lenses will reflect light (a small red or blue dot).
- Check Wifi: Use a network scanning app (like Fing) to see if any strange devices (like IP Cameras) are connected to the same Wifi.
Use Specialized Equipment
For high security, you can buy Radio Frequency (RF) Detectors. This device will beep or vibrate when near a signal source (transmitting camera/bug).
Prevention
- When entering a strange room, get into the habit of checking briefly.
- Unplug unnecessary electrical devices (TV, router) before sleeping.
- Use black tape to cover suspicious small holes.
- Turn on background music or white noise when having important conversations to interfere with recording devices.
